The Logistics

Day 1: La Paz – High Camp Approach | Entering Technical Terrain

We leave La Paz and drive to Pinaya where the expedition begins. The trail climbs steadily through alpine terrain toward Illimani’s massive glaciated face.

We establish base camp in a broad high valley beneath the mountain, giving the body time to begin adapting before moving higher.

Focus: Base camp approach & altitude entry

Elevation gain: ~800 m / 2,625 ft
Elevation loss: ~100 m / 328 ft

Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles
Hiking time: ~3–4 hours
Campsite elevation: ~4,300 m / 14,100 ft

Highest point: ~4,300 m / 14,100 ft

Difficulty: Moderate
Accommodation: Expedition tents

Day 2: Base Camp – High Camp | Entering Glacier Terrain

We ascend from base camp toward high camp, gaining elevation quickly as the terrain becomes steeper and more alpine.

As we approach the glacier, the environment becomes colder and more exposed. High camp is positioned just below the glacier for summit access.

Focus: High camp ascent & summit positioning

Elevation gain: ~1,200 m / 3,937 ft
Elevation loss: ~100 m / 328 ft

Distance: ~6 km / 3.7 miles
Hiking time: ~5–6 hours
Campsite elevation: ~5,450 m / 17,880 ft

Highest point: ~5,450 m / 17,880 ft

Difficulty: Challenging
Accommodation: Expedition tents

Day 3: Summit Illimani | Technical Alpine Ascent

We begin before midnight, stepping onto the glacier under headlamps. The route climbs through steep snow and ice, requiring focus and controlled movement.

The ascent is long and technical, pushing into extreme altitude before reaching the summit ridge.

From the top, the Cordillera Real stretches endlessly below.

Focus: Technical summit ascent

Elevation gain: ~1,000 m / 3,280 ft
Elevation loss: ~2,100 m / 6,889 ft

Distance: ~6–7 km / 4 miles
Hiking time: ~10–12 hours
Campsite elevation: ~5,450 m / 17,880 ft

Highest point: 6,438 m / 21,122 ft

Difficulty: Technical
Accommodation: Not included

Travel to La Paz and meals after the expedition are not included.

With everything in place, you are fully prepared for a technical alpine experience above one of Bolivia’s most iconic peaks.

Before You Go

Prepare for High Altitude

Illimani rises to 6,438 meters (21,122 feet), placing you in extreme altitude conditions. We strongly recommend arriving at least 2–3 days early and spending time at elevation in La Paz to acclimatize.

Hydration, rest, and controlled pacing are essential for performing well at this altitude.

Understand the Technical Nature

This is a technical alpine climb. You will be traveling on glacier terrain, using crampons, and moving through steep snow and ice.

This is where trekking transitions into mountaineering, requiring focus, balance, and efficient movement.

Prepare for Cold and Exposure

Conditions are cold, windy, and exposed throughout the expedition. Summit push takes place in freezing temperatures during the night and early morning hours.

Proper layering is essential for safety and comfort.

Build Strength and Endurance

This climb demands both endurance and control. Long hours at altitude combined with technical terrain require a strong physical base.

Training with uphill hiking, cardio, and leg strength will directly improve your experience.

Be Ready for a Direct Ascent

Illimani is climbed in a shorter, more direct style. You will gain elevation quickly and move into high camp without long acclimatization rotations. Your ability to adapt efficiently is key.

Prepare for an Early Summit Push

Summit day begins before midnight. You will move on glacier terrain in darkness using a headlamp, requiring steady pacing and focus. Rest and preparation the day before are critical.

Respect the Mountain

Illimani is a serious alpine environment. Once on the mountain, conditions are remote and demanding. Follow your guide’s direction and respect the terrain at all times.

Final Mindset

This is where your progression becomes technical.

You are not just climbing a peak—you are learning how to move confidently in high-altitude alpine terrain.
